What Google actually measures

Google grades real-world experience with Core Web Vitals — three metrics that reflect how a page feels to an actual visitor, measured from real users' devices:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content appears — Google's threshold for "good" is 2.5 seconds or less
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds when someone clicks or taps — 200 milliseconds or less is considered good
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how stable the layout is while loading — anything jumping around as the page loads hurts this score

Pass these, and you earn a ranking edge over slower competitors. Fail them, and no amount of keywords will fully compensate, because Google is measuring what your visitors actually feel.

  • Compress and resize images, and serve them in modern formats like WebP — oversized images are the most common cause of slow LCP
  • Lazy-load images below the fold so they do not compete with the first view
  • Preload the main hero image so the largest element appears quickly
  • Reduce and defer heavy scripts — every chat widget, tracker, and plugin has a cost
  • Set explicit dimensions on images so the layout never jumps while loading
  • Use reliable, fast hosting — no optimization can rescue a slow server

Work through them in that order and re-test after each change, so you know which fix actually moved your numbers.

When optimization is not enough

Sometimes the honest answer is that the foundation is the problem.
